Rhyzopertha dominica Fabricius (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae): Growth and Developement on Six Different Varieties of Maize (Zea mays L.)

Laboratory experiment was conducted by no choice test method to study the growth and development of R. dominica  on six different maize varieties. The result revealed that to characterizing the growth and development of R. dominica was more approriate by using number of eggs, larvae, pupae, and F1 progeny and the percentage of weight loss rather than usingdevelopment time, stage of development time, median development time, larvae growth index, growth index, biotic potential, and susceptibility index. This phenomenon as there are a positif correlation between number of eggs, larvae, pupae, F1 progeny with development time, and median development time. The growth and development of R. dominica were faster on ROK maize variety rather than the other maize varieties tested. As the highest number of eggs, larvae, pupae, F1 progeny emerged, and the percentage of weight loss were appeared in ROK variety. On the other hand, the lowest growth and longest development of R. dominica were appeared in Anoman variety. The variation of growth and development of  R. dominica was due to the variation of physical and biochemical characteristic of maize varieties tested.
